Can you imagine a website that offers organized, quality-filtered information on a wide variety of health topics and then links to the services in the community related to that topic? Indiana University School of Medicine Library has been working with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to develop such a resource for Indiana. That resource, INHealthConnect, is a database of local resources with over 6000 records that are linked from MedlinePlus – the gold standard of health information for the public. IUSML was the third group in the country to accomplish this and the first to use the system developed by NLM.

The database is accessed directly at http://medlineplus.gov/inhealthconnect or from a topic (such as diabetes) on http://medlineplus.gov. From the MedlinePlus topic click on the Go Local menu, select Indiana, and then enter choose a county or city in Indiana or enter a zip code. For diabetes the services include clinical trials, endocrinologists, ophthalmologists, health screening programs, diabetes educators, home health equipment, weight management programs and a variety of other services.

Although this database will always be a work in progress, a Kickoff Event will be held on September 14, 2005 at the Indiana University School of Medicine Library. The event will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a time for remarks at 3:00 p.m. by Judith Monroe, M.D., Indiana State Health Commissioner, Marya Overby, representative of the Mayor’s Office, and the IUSM Associate Dean of IRET, Julie McGowan, Ph.D.
